Congratulations to Philip Warren for the enticing and enchanting tale called Porphyrean’s Choice, the first sentences of which you can read here:
Porphyrean turned, his idle gaze pervading the purple twilight of the overhanging emerald vineleaves and procrastinating in the pearly light from the wintrous beads of the many thousand chandeliers that clustered about the globing dome of the voluptuan ceiling. In those violet shadows stirred thoughts unmentionable, eddies in the pool of Porphyrean’s divine mind.
Queen Scaramuthe stroked her lover’s long and shining hair from the high and stony shelf of his thoughtful brow, her tracing fingers dividing his cascading locks right down to his reclining waist where the winding braids ended in jewels and lumps of chiselled gold. Her eyes flickered fancifully in the half-light, embers of thought fading and flaring in the deep and ash-choked grate of her ancient mind as she watched her lover lick the bitten flesh of a blue and green grape before dropping it whole with a delicate and miniature ceremony of fingers and lips into the ebony abyss of his gullet...

Congratulations to Samantha Smith for her wonderful poem Autumn!
As the fog falls and the frost feathers all,
As night gathers and the gloom grows close,
Fires flicker in the dark and flames leap up,
Warming the soft circles of small spaces,
Filling with bright life the shadowed corners,
Conjuring up from within us the glow
Of sweeter comforts, the gentle passions,
The deeper satisfactions with small things
That summer cannot touch nor think much of
In its brighter brashness, gawdy with light.
Winter approaches; even the word sends
A shiver down some spinal corridor.
We wrap ourselves up against the dark wind
But in the same motion ponder the hearth,
And smile down within at intimate thoughts,
Private, personal worlds, and inner things.
Clocks tick, flames lick, the kettle boils again,
The elements remind us of our place
Beneath the spinning shadow of the globe,
Robed in our own mortality, quiet,
Content, unprotesting, inward and mild.

I propose, as J.R.R. Tolkien did, to speak about fairy-stories, but I will use a term which has grown to mean something a little different over the last fifty years or so since Tolkien wrote his great essay: fantasy. Essentially, though, we are talking about the same thing -a fantasy land is, as he described Faerie, wide and deep and high and filled with many things. The trouble is that these days there are perhaps too many things in it...
